Ophelia Sleeps, 2006
Ultrachromes. Variable dimensions.
This series is inspired by the Pre-Raphaelite painting Ophelia, 1852 by John Everett Millais. I am exploring the psychological deterioration of Hamlet's Ophelia. I used the landscape as an allegorical symbol of Ophelia's unassuming exterior during her descent into madness. The figure acts as a fragment of memory, or rather a residual presence re-enacting her last moments.
